Iraq Sends Letters to Regional, Intl. Organizations Over Israeli Threats
In response to Israel’s threats of military action against Iraq, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry has sent official letters to regional and international organizations, warning that the occupying regime is exploiting retaliatory strikes by resistance groups as a pretext to expand its aggression in West Asia.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that it has sent these letters to the UN Security Council, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation after Israel warned Baghdad that unless it reins in the attacks by the resistance groups, it faces Israeli strikes on its territory.
The ministry emphasized in its letters that Iraq is a pillar for stability in its regional and international surroundings, adding that it is among the countries most committed to the principles of the United Nations Charter.
It also pointed out that Israel’s recent letter to the UN Security Council demanding immediate action against resistance groups launching retaliatory strikes is part of a systematic policy to create allegations and pretexts with the aim of expanding the scope of the conflict in the region.
The ministry further noted that “Iraq’s resort to the Security Council comes from its keenness to have the Council perform its role in maintaining international peace and security, and the need to take the necessary measures to stop the Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, and to obligate the Zionist entity to stop the ongoing violence in the region and stop issuing threats.”
It also stated that “Iraq was keen to exercise self-restraint regarding the use of its airspace to target a neighboring country,” affirming the importance of the international community’s intervention to stop these aggressive behaviors, which constitute a blatant violation of the principles of international law.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry further called for “concerted international efforts to stop the Israeli escalation in the region and ensure respect for international laws and conventions which contributes to enhancing the security and stability in the region.”
Iraq also requested that the letter be circulated to member states and registered as an official document with the relevant organizations.”
On Monday, Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar sent a letter to the UN Security Council, asking the body to pressure the Iraqi government to end attacks by resistance fighters in the Arab country against the Tel Aviv regime’s interests.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani condemned the Israeli letter as a “pretext to justify aggression against Iraq,” saying it aligns with the regime’s ongoing efforts to expand the war in the region,”
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of anti-terror fighters, has been conducting numerous operations against sensitive targets lying across the Israeli-occupied territories since October 7 last year, when the Zionist entity began waging a bloody onslaught against the Gaza Strip.
At least 44,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have been killed in the brutal Israeli military onslaught so far.
