Ministry of Human Rights organizes symposium on national & international women’s protection mechanisms
The Ministry of Human Rights organized on Tuesday a symposium on national and international protection mechanisms for women affected by wars and disasters.
The symposium, with the participation of a number of representatives of government agencies and civil society organizations, discussed the role of Yemeni women in the humanitarian, economic and development fields, the impacts and damages caused to them as a result of the aggression and blockade, and the mechanisms available to protect affected women and apply them effectively.
At the opening of the symposium, Minister of Human Rights Ali Hussein Al-Dailami stressed the importance of discussing the harms that Yemeni women face as a result of the aggression and siege, and the need to activate national and international laws, legislation and mechanisms protecting women in general and those affected by the aggression and siege in particular.
He pointed out the importance of focusing the working papers submitted to the symposium on humanitarian cases and how to serve women victims in need of aid and support, especially those affected by the aggression and siege.
He explained that women are the groups that pay the price most in times of wars and disasters, and that everyone must bear the responsibility to protect them.
Minister Al-Dailami considered women among the most vulnerable and affected groups, which necessitates finding visions, mechanisms and solutions to the harms that women are exposed to in order to protect them and alleviate their suffering, as well as protect the most vulnerable and marginalized groups.
He also stressed that most of the damages, crimes and violations that Yemeni women are exposed to are caused by aggression and siege, urging the concerned authorities and civil society organizations to redouble efforts to implement national mechanisms and have a tangible impact in serving and protecting women.
The Minister of Human Rights stressed the need to put pressure on international bodies to assume their responsibility and play their role during wars and disasters to protect civilians, especially women and children, indicating that there are procedures and mechanisms regarding women that are taken, especially during the period of aggression and siege, with the aim of protecting women from any exploitation.
He expressed his dissatisfaction with the dilution of the important issues of Yemeni women by the United Nations and its focus on marginal issues.
During the symposium, which was attended by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Human Rights, Ali Tayseer, two working papers were presented. In the first paper, Marwan Al-Shaibani dealt with protection mechanisms for women affected by wars and disasters, while Bahaa Al-Din Al-Maqtari reviewed in the second paper the effects of disasters and international crises on humanitarian aid and its treatment.
