Security Council supports appointment of new international envoy to Libya
The United Nations Security Council on Saturday supported Jan Kubis, a Slovak as an international envoy to Libya.
According to what a source in the Security Council told the media, there were no objections to Kubis’ appointment as a special envoy to Libya, and a second source confirmed this information. Now the Secretary-General must make the formal appointment decision.
Earlier, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, proposed the appointment of the current United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Jan Kubis, as an international envoy to Libya, about a year after the resignation of the former mediator.
During his career, Kubis served as the United Nations envoy to Iraq between 2015 and 2018, having held similar positions in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2015.
He was also appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of his country from 2006 to 2009, and he was also Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe for six years from 2005 to 2011.
Kubis is fluent in Slovak, Czech, English and Russian, as well as French.
