Germany halts arms sales for Saudi war in Yemen
Germany’s ban on arms sales to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia due to its involvement in the war in Yemen, Which angered Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir.
” The idea that weapon sales were stopped to Saudi Arabia because of the Yemen war I think is illogical,” al-Jubeir said, pointing that: “We can buy weapons from a number of countries, and we do so.”
On his part, Head of the National Delegation, Mohammed Abdulsalam, praised the countries that have taken steps to stop selling weapons to the Saudi regime.
“We express our appreciation to the countries that have taken steps to stop selling weapons to the Saudi regime, that killed the children of Yemen,” Abdulsalam said .
German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s coalition agreed in March 2018 to prevent arms sales from being delivered to any country directly involved in the war in Yemen. The ban is due to be lifted at the end of this year.
The Saudi regime has received the decision as a surprise, as of the killing of civilians in Yemen has nothing to do with these arms deals.
Prior to the ruling, Germany exported €254 million ($300 million) to Saudi in 2017.
