6.6-magnitude quake hits south Philippine

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit the south of Philippine on Tuesday, local authorities reported.

According to the authorities, residents were injured and buildings were damaged in the an area from an earlier earthquake two weeks ago.

Terrified citizens fled to the streets after the quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey said hit Mindanao island, as schools and offices opened.

The U.S. Agency had initially reported a magnitude of 6.8 and ruled out a tsunami threat.

The region continues to suffer from the effects of a 6.4-magnitude earthquake two weeks ago, which killed at least five people and damaged dozens of buildings.

The Philippines is part of the Pacific “belt of fire”, a seismically active region that stretches from Japan across Southeast Asia and the Pacific Basin.
