Several dead, wounded in mass shooting in California

At least four people were killed and several others injured in a mass shooting at a food festival in California on Monday, local police said.

Police Station Director Scott Smith said four people, including the suspect, were killed and others injured in a shooting at the annual Gilroy Garlick Festival in Gilroy, south of San Jose, California.

Investigations are still under way, he added.

Videos posted on social media showed festival-goers running in a confused fashion in various directions, while a loud bang was heard in the background.

The Gilroy Garlick Festival founded in 1979, includes food, beverages, live art performances and culinary competitions. The festival organizers say volunteers are hosting it and describe it as the world’s largest summer food festival.

NBC quoted a eyewitness, Julissa Contreras, as saying that a white man in his 30s had fired using a rifle.

“I could see him shooting in every direction,” Contreras said. He wasn’t specifically targeting anyone.”
