Alarming statistics of deadly diseases in Yemen

A report issued on Monday by the Yemeni Ministry of Health revealed that more than 600,000 cases of malaria were registered during 2018 in several provinces of Yemen headed by Hodeidah which is the most affected area by malaria, followed by Hajjah and Taiz provinces.

According to a United Nations’s report issued last September, a Yemeni child dies every 10 minutes because of malnutrition or other diseases.

The report indicated that at least 15 women die every day at delivery for several reasons, where the siege and the war, for four years, are the most important ones.

The report pointed out that about 44913 cases of Maltese fever recorded in Dhamar and Sana’a were among the most affected, other 28031 cases of dengue fever , and the number of cases of rabies exceeded 6900 cases, the province of Dhamar top listed the countries most affected by this disease, then comes the province of Ibb, amid the lack of medicines for the disease.

It pointed out that leishmaniasis has infected about 4742 cases during the past year, and more than 24871 people were infected with schistosomiasis, Hajjah came at the top list then Saada province.

The report pointed out that 493 death cases because of acute watery diarrhea “cholera” and the 361266 infectious cases in different provinces, and the 3103 infectious cases of diphtheria, 178 of them died, while 4002 people were infected with tuberculosis.

The report mentioned the spread of smallpox came back again in 2018, more than it was previously, infecting 36,672 citizens, mostly children, as well as the injury of 32811 citizens with mumps disease “parotiditis.”

The report concluded mentoning this statistic is only for those who have been referred to hospitals and health centres, and their condition has been monitored, noting that there are other dozens were unable to go to hospitals for several reasons, the most important one is the poor financial situation suffered by the Yemeni citizen since coalition transferred Yemen’s bank from Sana’a to Aden.

In March 2015, the US -backed –Saudi-led coalition started  a war against Yemen with the declared aim of crushing the Houthi Ansarullah movement, who had taken over from the staunch Riyadh ally and fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, while also seeking to secure the Saudi border with its southern neighbor. Three years and over 600,000 dead and injured Yemeni people and  prevented the patients from travelling abroad for treatment and blocked the entry of medicine into the war-torn country, the war has yielded little to that effect.

Despite the coalition claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi bombers are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

More than 2,200 others have died of cholera, and the crisis has triggered what the United Nations has described as the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.

However, Saudi Arabia relies heavily on the US in its brutal war on Yemen. Washington has deployed a commando force on the Arab kingdom’s border with Yemen to help destroy arms belonging to Yemen’s popular Houthi Ansarullah movement. Washington has also provided logistical support and aerial refueling.
