From the Unexpected to the Unknown
Written by Hind Abbas
How did a normal day emerge in the village of Mazah on the Red Sea coast of Yemen before the war? Kadija, a 42-year-old woman, remembers:
“I used to wake up every morning to the sound of the cocks, I saw the fishermen in the sea fishing, the women were either cows’ milk, doing housework at home or selling homemade vegetables and bread in the busy market of the village.” You can hear the laughter and joy of children running, playing football They dream of becoming doctors and teachers.
Ordinary days, but happy in the past, have come to an end. “Not only for me, but for all the villagers,” says Cada.
“When the war started, I ran away from our village with my sister and brother, leaving our house, goats, farm and everything behind us, as we were leaving our village and looking out the window of the car, my heart was breaking into pieces, and I cried silently. “Adds Cadiga.
Most of the inhabitants of the village of Qadija left everything behind them and fled. They were afraid of the air strikes and rockets that rained down on the village. Kadia and her family were lucky enough to escape from the village with their neighbor who owned a car. Others fled to the town where they had family members or sought a safer place to stay. Some walked for 10-12 hours to search for safety. Others did not. They died during explosions, explosions, shootings or mines.
“When we arrived in the city we went to our aunt’s house, but they were not there, we did not have a place to stay, we sold our mother’s earrings that she gave us before her death.
“The more I remember my village and how our lives were to be, my heart is hurting … My only wish for the future is for the war to end and for us to be able to return home,” concludes Kadish.
