At least 30 killed in armed attack in Ethiopia

Gunmen killed at least 30 people in an attack on a village in the western Ethiopian region of Oromiya on  late Tuesday evening, witnesses said Wednesday.

Local authorities blamed the attack, in which 15 more people were wounded, on a splinter group from the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), known as OLF Shane or the Oromo Liberation Army, according to Reuters.

The group’s representatives could not be reached for comment.

The Oromiya Region Communications Office said in a statement that an unknown number of civilians were killed in what it described as a “terrorist attack,” adding that “the region is saddened by this horrific and heinous attack.”

The OLF is an opposition party that spent years in exile but was unbanned after Abiy took office in 2018.
