15 killed in brutal attacks on indigenous village in Mexico
Mexican authorities said at least 15 residents of an indigenous village in the south of the country have been killed in one of the most brutal attacks in the past few years.
According to Reuters, Oaxaca state prosecutor’s authority said they identified the bodies of 13 men and two women as victims of the attacks on Sunday night and Monday morning in the municipality of San Mateo del Mar, east of the Pacific port of Salina Cruz.
The San Mateo del Mar municipal government said in a statement that the attack was carried out by at least six armed men with the support of a suspected leader of a local criminal organization.
Oaxaca state prosecutors said investigations were underway to find out who sparked the violence in the village.
The municipal government stated that the attackers had tortured a number of victims and burned them alive. A state official said the images were real.
No arrests had been made so far in connection with the incident, and the state officials said the municipality of San Mateo del Mare had been plagued by land disputes for many years.
