5.8 magnitude earthquake strikes at India-Myanmar border

A powerful earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit northeastern India near the border with Myanmar and Bangladesh early Monday.

“An earthquake was recorded at 22:40 UTC (1:40 a.m. local time) , and the epicenter is located 18 km east of India,” the US Geophysical Authority said.

The epicenter is 8.9 km deep, and no information was received about possible damage and injuries.

In another context, the US Geological Survey announced last Thursday that a 7.4-magnitude earthquake occurred in northeast New Zealand, at a depth of 20.5 miles (33 km).

The tremors were recorded at 12:50 GMT (15:50 Moscow time) and the epicenter was 684 km northeast of Opua, New Zealand.
