WHO Warns of Dangerous Acceleration Phase of the Spread of CVID-19

The World Health Organization warned Friday of a “new and dangerous phase” of the coronavirus pandemic with people tiring of lockdowns despite the disease’s accelerating spread. The warning came as it emerged the virus was present in Italy in December, months before its first confirmed cases and about the same time as the disease was first reported in China.
The virus, which has now killed more than 454,000 people and infected 8.4 million people worldwide, is surging in the Americas and parts of Asia even as Europe starts to ease restrictive measures.
Lockdowns imposed to halt the spread of the disease have caused crippling economic damage, but the WHO said the pandemic still posed a major threat.
“The world is in a new and dangerous phase. Many people are understandably fed up with being at home but the virus is still spreading fast,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual news conference. Brazil has the world’s worst outbreak outside the United States, with 978,142 confirmed cases and 47,748 deaths.
In terms of daily infections, the organization recorded the highest daily death toll of people infected with the epidemic in Egypt and Morocco, since the epidemic appeared in the two countries. Although the Moroccan Ministry of Health announced that the number of infected people reached five hundred and forty, most of them in the north of the country, and the number of deaths reached two hundred and fifty.

However, the authorities are working to accelerate the gradual lifting of quarantine in and around major cities, while extending the health emergency until next July.
In Egypt, the authorities recorded one thousand seven hundred and eighty new infections and eighty new deaths, about two weeks before the scheduled date to reduce precautionary measures to confront the disease.
In Saudi Arabia, the number of new cases continues to rise as the authorities begin to ease movement and travel restrictions. The number of deaths has exceeded forty-five cases and the number of infected is four thousand and three hundred new cases.
