UNICEF: More than 11 million Yemeni children in urgent need of humanitarian assistance
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced on Sunday that more than 11 million Yemeni children are in desperate need of humanitarian aid following the US-backed Saudi-led war that has been going on for nearly three years.
“More than 11 million Yemeni children (about 40 percent of the population) today are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance,” said UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa Geert Cappelaere at a news conference in the Jordanian capital Amman.
“Yemen is suffering the highest levels of malnutrition in the world’, according to a statement posted on the WHO website.
He pointed out that thousands of schools and health facilities were damaged or completely destroyed, while two million children in the country suffer from acute malnutrition.
