Instead of 16,000 Captives, ICRC has Verified 2,000 Names

President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer on Saturday said the lists of prisoners provided by both parties to Yemen war included some 16,000 names, but the committee has only verified 2,000 names.
In a statement to Al-Jazeera Channel on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum “Davos 2019”, Maurer announced that the Committee has completed its logistical preparations for the exchange of detainees in Yemen between Sanaa authorities and the exiled Hadi’s government appointed by Riyadh. He added that the Committee obtained obligations to investigate the fate of the missing persons from both parties.
ICRC president pointed out that the humanitarian situation in Yemen is still unstable, and that it is difficult to deliver humanitarian aid to those in need due to continued fighting in different areas.
National Committee for Captives’ Affairs said last week that it informed the Saudi side through the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Yemen that one of the Saudi captives is sick and his condition is worsening.
The committee offered the Saudi side an urgent deal for the captive in exchange for releasing a number of wounded captives and that the operation would be carried out through the United Nations.
