FM meets UNESCO Office Director

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Engineer Hisham Sharaf Abdullah, discussed today, Saturday, with the Director of the UNESCO Office in the Gulf States and Yemen, Salah Khaled, cooperation relations between the Republic of Yemen and UNESCO and ways to develop them.

In the meeting, Sharaf stressed the importance of strengthening the level of relations between Sana’a and UNESCO, in light of the damage to a number of historical sites in most provinces, including registered on UNESCO World Heritage List, such as the ancient cities of Sana’a, Zabid, historical Shibam, and others.

He called on UNESCO to the importance of UNESCO’s presence in Yemen and to provide the necessary technical support to specialists in the field of tangible, intangible heritage and the mechanism for their registration with the organization.

Sharaf stated that Yemeni coffee is one of the best types of coffee in the world and there is an urgent need to register it in the World Heritage List, and it is of great importance to support UNESCO for the national committee concerned with preparing the registration file.

For his part, Khaled stressed that the relations of UNESCO and Yemen are historical and that UNESCO is ready to provide the necessary technical support.
